WELLSBORO, Penn. (June 3, 2010) — The Waste Management Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally, presented by Citizens & Northern Bank, winds its way through the remote forests of north central Pennsylvania. The event is exciting for competitors and fans, but in past years, on some parts of the course, when one wanted to use a mobile phone to call, send a text message or to utilize the Internet, their only reception was dead air. No signal.
Round 5 of Rally America's National Championship, this year the STPR organizers are excited to announce that one particular area that has traditionally had no accessible major carrier's service will have contact with the outside world.
Globecomm Systems Inc., a leading global provider of satellite-based communications announced today that
Indigo Wireless, a rural wireless operator with service areas in Pennsylvania, will use Globecomm's Transportable SatCell wireless network to provide GSM wireless coverage at the event's Germania service area on Saturday, June 5.
"We're excited. For the first time ever, we'll have cell coverage at one of our major service areas," said Meridith Croucher, head of STPR. "Communications are critical for an event this size."
Croucher added that the benefits not only assist the event's organizers and volunteers, but now competitors have a way to contact their crews and families while at Germania.
"Now competitors, volunteers and fans can use their cell phones and can also utilize social media like Twitter and Facebook to send out and receive tidbits of information via the Internet," Croucher said. "Those with Smart phones can send out photos and videos from a remote area assured they'll have fast, reliable cellular service."
STPR begins at noon on Friday, June 4, in downtown Wellsboro when the cars will be on display around The Green. The official rally start is 2:01 p.m.
Further information, including downloadable driving directions to spectator areas for both Friday and Saturday are available at
