2008 Waste Management Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally
June 6 - 7, 2008 Wellsboro, Penn.
Rally Notes - Saturday Late afternoon

21. The Rally America web site – www.rally-america.com – has been keeping everyone informed as the cars head toward through the woods on their way to the final stage later this evening at the Tioga County Fairgrounds. Let’s dip in to their site for the latest:

Car 87 Williams/Secor - Williams has rallied for years in England, but this is the second Rally America event and they are having fun and are doing well.

Car 686 Nunnemacher/DeMotte are out at 2 miles into SS5. They have requested their service crew.

Car 2 Pinker/Durant are still have boost leak issues and have lost the lead - they are down by more than 3 minutes. The team is understandably frustrated at the newest failure in their season of too many failures.

Car 20 ACP/Goldfarb sustained damage to the left rear. It seems the team got behind on notes. Additionally, their motor is running hot as well. Right now, they are in 3rd position, less than 1 minute off the lead - their championship lead still intact.

Car 55 Sarasin/Johansson are having differential problems and are currently running what is essentially a rear wheel drive car.

Car 80 Kemp/Hendrickson have rear damage.

Car 690 Bartram/Hotson have right rear damage.

Car 699 Sorenson/Jenny are reported as stopped on SS8 at 9.5. It is uncertain if they will be continuing. They are currently awaiting sweep's arrival.
Car 811 Sozanski/Sawicki is stopped on the side of the road on the transit after SS8. Apparently, they have a flat and are unable to get the wheel off. Notes from the stages (June 7th, 2008, 2:18PM)

Car 64 Borowicz/Borowicz has exceeded MPL and will be DNF'd. They have been stuggling with motor issues today.

Car 40 Mirra/Kihurani are being listed as stopped on SS7. No further details are available.

Car 101 Malone/Chestnutt is being listed as a DNF.

This is the first rally together for the driver and co-driver in Car 625. Despite having rear suspension issues last night and front suspension issues today; they are gelling well together and are looking forward to running together in the future. Today's issues which caused the team a late departure from service.

Car 724 McLelland/Price is having clutch issues now, but have indeed seemed to have fixed their rear suspension issues from last evening.

Car 99 Seeley/Wilburn has damage to the right rear. According to the team, "we cooked a hairpin turn too hard".

Cars have finished stage 8 of the Waste Management STPR; Stage 8 is also the finale for the Sherwood Forest Regional Rally.

The leaderboard for the Waste Management STPR is as follows:

Car 17 L'Estage/Richard 1:11:19.9
Car 34 Foust/Beavis +0:09.7
Car 46 Johnson/Wimpey +1:04.4

Three of the top five cars are having turbo problems. L'Estage came in smoking heavily. His turbo is blown; it is unknown if he has a spare for his one of a kind 2007 Hyundai Tiburon. In addition, Car 34 Foust/Beavis experienced the same problem on SS8 (an interecooler not connected to the turbo) that Car 2 Pinker/Durant experienced on SS4. Car 2 is still experiencing the those same issues.

Car 20 ACP/Goldfarb have blown a motor and are being listed as a DNF. If Matthew Johnson wins, then ACP will be tied for the overall drivers championship; otherwise ACP will maintain his lead.

Car 40 Mirra/Kihurani, previously reported as stopped on stage, has now been confirmed to be off on SS7. Both are OK. Car 59 driver Pat Moro stated "all we saw was tracks."

Car 80 Kemp/Hendrickson are being listed as DNF due to a transfer case.

Car 55 Sarasin/Johansson have broken differential and gearbox problems. The team replaced a gearbox prior to the last service, but unfortunately, it seems something is amiss as they are now DNF'd after they lost 5th gear. With all the carnage here, it was hoped that this fan favorite would have been able to score his first overall win, but unfortunately, it was not to be here at the Waste Management STPR.

2008 Waste Management Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally
June 6 – 7, 2008
Wellsboro, Penn.
Rally Notes – Saturday Mid-afternoon II

19. More on the scoring as a result of Pastrana’s roll-over on stage #4. The first six cars on the road before Pastrana/Ringer will get to keep their scores on the stage, with the rest of the field being given the time of the sixth car as a bogey time. This means the Kyle Sarasin/Mikael Johansson Subaru Impreza wins the stage, with Antoine L’Estage/Natalie Richard 2007 Hyundai Tiburon second. This gives the Hyundai the overall lead in the rally, which L’Estage held on to with a third place finish on stage five. Tanner Foust/Christine Beavis won stage five, and crept within ten seconds of L’Estage for the overall lead after five.

20. Here are the top ten after five stages:

2008 Waste Management Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally
June 6 – 7, 2008
Wellsboro, Penn.
Rally Notes – Saturday AM

14. The Waste Management Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally presented by Citizens and Northern Bank left the Green in downtown Wellsboro, Penn. at 10:31 AM Eastern time today. 41 cars took the green flag in front of the Wellsboro Chamber of Commerce, including the two cars that did not finish yesterday, the Subaru of Block/Gelsomino and the Subaru of Arce/Chevalier. Both those cars are officially out of contention for rally points and will not be scored, although Arce/Chevalier re-entered in the region rally that includes the last six stages of the national. Block is continuing because his new Subaru can use the test time as both his and teammate Travis Pastrana’s car had problems yesterday with failed lower control arms on the rough Waste Management stages.

15. No sooner had the Asaph stage (#4) started then the #199 Pastrana/Ringer Subaru rolled over in the middle of the stage, going off the course. The drivers put out the red cross from their route book indicating that they might need medical attention, and the medical staff went down the stage to evaluate the situation. The stage was stopped, and then cancelled as cars were transited through to the start of stage #5. Both driver and co-driver were out of the car and okay, and the car was towed to service for possible repairs and a chance to continue the rally for testing (they are out of the rally for points and position). More as we learn more.

16. With the accident above and the transiting of cars to the start of stage #5, the rally is now running about an hour late. Stage #5 was scheduled to start at 11:50 AM, and the first car started the stage at 12:50 PM.

17. One of the unique features of this year’s event is, with the changed schedule, that many of the stages that people have only seen at night (or taken picture of at night) will now see the light of day for the first time. The rally then ends tonight at the Tioga County Fairgrounds with a Kenny Bartram motorcycle jump demonstration at 7:30 PM followed by the final Subaru Super Special Stage at 9:30 PM. More than 2,500 people attended last night’s Super Special, which was won by the Subaru Impreza of Tanner Faust/Christine Beavis.

18. The Andrew Comrie-Picard/Marc Goldfarb Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9RS, which leads the points championship chase, stands to be the real winner today if they can just keep their car on the road. Picard, who leads Pastrana by a point and Block by three points, can grab a large lead in the championship by finishing on the podium. They are currently fourth in the rally after four stages.

12. The reason Ken Block did not finish the second stage because his new Subaru suffered a broken suspension. Teammates Travis Pastana (Davidsonville, MD) and Derek Ringer (England) also suffered rear suspension damage, but Travis will continue.

2008 Waste Management Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally
June 6 – 7, 2008
Wellsboro, Penn.
Rally Notes – Friday mid-afternoon

5. We have our first DNF of the rally, with the 2000 Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS of Emilio Arce and Tim Chevalier taking one of the stage #1 jumps a little to vigorously, landing nose-first on the road and damaging the front ending, including tearing off the skid plate. They were able to get their car off the road with the help of the marshals, however, and no one was hurt. The car will remain on the side of the road until the second stage (the first stage run the other way) is done.

6. The last car on the road on stage #1, the Nissan Sentra SE-R of Silvio Alva/Benjamin Slocum, reported seeing a cinnamon bear darting across the stage right near the Waste Management company viewing area.

7. The oldest car is the rally, a 1975 Saab 99, driven by Luke Sorenson/Josh Jenny from Wycombe, Penn., runs rallies all over the Northeast, attracting attention from all the vintage Saab enthusiasts.

8. The Andrew Pinker (Perth, Australia)/Robbie Durant (Oxfordshire, England) 2006 Subaru Impreza WRX STI, whose rough start to the season means that he needs a win here to qualify for the X-games, had first choice for starting position for the rally, and thought about taking the first-on-the-road position as he pondered the wear and tear on the road from starting farther back. His logic for picking second position was that he wouldn‘t be the one pulling up all the rocks in the first position, but he wouldn’t be the one hitting as many pulled rocks in fourth or fifth. Pinker likes the new format where the spectators can see the whole stage at the Fairgrounds, and the new forest roads on Saturday. Pinker was the overall winner here a year ago.

9. The Matt Johnson (Apex, NC)/Jeremy Whimpey (Blacksburg, VA) 2007 Subaru STI, currently fourth n the point standings, also likes the set-up of the new two-day schedule because it is spectator-friendly (much more daylight) and the fans can see the entire stage at the Fairgrounds. Johnson says the key to his success so far this season is driving within himself – knowing what his limits are and staying within them.

10. As we mentioned, Ken Block (Rancho Santa Fe, CA) and Allesandro Gelsomino (Santa Clarita, CA) are driving the new 2008 Subaru Impreza, and Block really likes the way it handles due to the combination of lower center of gravity and new rear suspension. Block picked first on the road in the seeded draw to avoid hitting other people’s rocks. With the two rough stages ahead, Block wants to get through as quick as he can, and make any necessary adjustments on the car for the Saturday stages.

11. Time for stages #1 and #2 are due in shortly, and late word is that the Block/Gelsomina Subaru is out of the rally. Details coming in the next report.

2008 Waste Management Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally
June 6 – 7, 2008
Wellsboro, Penn.
Pre-Rally Notes – Friday early afternoon

1. Welcome to the 2008 Waste Management Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally presented by Citizens and Northern Bank, round #5 of the Rally America National Championship series, and the 32nd running of this classic rally through the woods of North Central Pennsylvania. For this year’s event, the biggest changes include a new event sponsor – Waste Management, North America’s largest recycler, and a new format which includes rallying for the first time on Friday as well as Saturday. Other firsts for this year include a spectator-friendly schedule which includes daylight-only competition, and the use of the Tioga County Fairgrounds for two special closed-course stages which will provide additional excitement.

2. The rally is a National Rally, approximately 258 miles long with approximately 114 miles of competitive stages. The Sherwood Forest Rally is a Regional Rally (for competitors who are not running for national Rally America Championship points), coefficient 3 that includes Stages One through Eight and is approximately 75 miles. The Finger Lakes Rally is a Regional Rally, coefficient 2 that includes Stages Nine through Thirteen and is approximately 47 miles – both Regional rallies are run in conjunction with the full national event. 41 cars are on the start list, with the rally commencing from the Tioga County Fairgrounds at 2:05 PM Friday and heading towards the first two stages, which are on the grounds of the local Waste Management facility.

3. As these Waste Management stages, going over a 9.1-mile road created from a reclaimed ATV trail, a surface of old mine slag (fine rock fragments), muddy gullies, and trees very close to the road, the drivers have been cautioned to use discretion to ensure they stay on the road. The course is very twisty, with little run-off area and lots of places to make a mistake. First car on the road will be the 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI of Ken Block and Alessandro Gelsomino (more on that car and the Travis Pastrana/Derek Ringer team car in note #4), and others will be looking for him for course “guidance.” The drivers all were led through the stages yesterday in parade fashion, and everyone is committed to make sure they finish the stages and not become early DNFs.

4. As mentioned above, this rally marks the national debut of the 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI rally car, built in Colchester, Vermont by Lance Smith’s Vermont Sports Car organization. The 2008 STI, the third generation of the legendary Subaru WRX STI model line, features a new 5-door hatchback design making it strikingly different visually compared to the outgoing 2007 model. Some key differences from the 2007 model include a longer wheelbase for improved high-speed stability, a wider track for increased maneuverability, and the addition of a double wishbone rear suspension for even better road-holding capabilities. Add to this better front-to-rear weight distribution plus an even lower center of gravity and the all-new 2008 Subaru WRX STI Open Class rally car is expected to perform even better than the outgoing 2007 model it replaces. The engine and transmission remain unchanged for 2008.
